Wonderful! Another 5 Stars for Serpents Underfoot!

First, a short preamble!

wonderful

I first became acquainted with Cristina Pugh a few months ago. Cristina’s late husband, Johnny F. Pugh, is the author of Through Smoke-Teared Eyes: The Vietnam War I Fought. Cristina contacted me through Authors.com. She asked if I’d read her late husband’s book and perhaps post a short review of it online.

I did so and a few weeks later, posted my review of her late husband’s book on Amazon.com. This is a wonderful and amazing book. In addition, it is a winner of several awards! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the infantryman’s experience during the Vietnam War. You can read my review here if you would like to.

Yesterday, I received a wonderful surprise!

Cristina wrote a wonderful Five Star review of Serpents Underfoot on Amazon.com calling it

“An intelligent current-day spy novel with a love story that dates back to the Vietnam War.”

You can read the entire review here. I have included an excerpt:

wonderful

In summary, Serpents Underfoot is a very well-written novel that exhibits Gilbert’s passion for and extensive knowledge of military history, martial arts and spy sagas. It quite effectively blends these themes with terrorist threats from well-financed middle-eastern extremists and current-day foreign government meddling into controlling and financing United States presidential campaigns. Any reader who loves spy novels combined with an exotic love story that goes back decades will certainly enjoy this book. D.C. Gilbert is currently working on a sequel to this, his first work of fiction, and I am looking forward to reading more by this very talented and skilled author.

Cristina Pugh

All I can say, Cristina, is thank you for the wonderful review. I am so glad you enjoyed the book.

A few Happy Veterans Day quotes:

I’m trying to raise the awareness of the troops that, when they deploy and go to war, it’s not just them at war – it’s also their family. Their family is having to go through all the hardships and the stresses. ~ Chis Kyle
The U.S. Military is us. There is no truer representation of a country than the people that it sends into the field to fight for it. The people who wear our uniform and carry our rifles into combat are our kids, and our job is to support them, because they’re protecting us. ~ Tom Clancy
The valor and courage of our young women and men in the armed services are a shining example to all of the world, and we owe them and their families our deepest respect. ~ Bill Frist

And, a few Happy Veterans Day cartoons!

On a more personal note:

We all need to give Veterans Day and our veterans the respect they deserve. Members of my family have served this nation going all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Several of my best friends have been Vietnam Vets. This is not unique and I am sure there are many families like mine. People who love this country and are willing to write that blank check to serve and protect it. When you see a veteran … thank him, shake his hand, or even buy his lunch. He has certainly earned it!

Another Five Star Review for Serpents Underfoot

Yep! That’s another five star review!

Thank you, DD Gott, for the fantastic five star review of Serpents Underfoot.

What did I like? This is the first book that I have read from this author, but I was struck with the realism of the storyline. He truly knew his subject and characters and brought them to life with the stroke of his pen/computer. The reality of the storyline hit me like a ton of bricks. It seems like this was written as an episode of today’s life. Being an animal lover and knowing a little about working dogs, I was very impressed with the information and the use of his K9 partner, it was awesome.

What will you like? Extreme action, passionate characters, powerful storyline, well written, strong and yet touching with many lives put into action and learning curves. Well thought out and shows the intense research in every page from the martial arts to the life of the military. Action and reality make this an explosive action thriller for your next read.

Adirondack Bear Tales

In addition, keep an eye out for my upcoming new release! It is a wonderful collection of Adirondack Bear Tales based on real life encounters with black bears in the Adirondack Park of upstate New York.  These delightful family stories are enjoyable for adults and suitable for all ages. They would even make great bedtime stories for young children. It is not a long book … 11 short stories … but the stories vary between humorous, exciting, and even sad. Above all, they are very entertaining.

Likewise, if you have the time, I would love to get your help on selecting the cover for this book. I have two versions and like them both.

Two More Five Star Reviews for Serpents Underfoot!

Thank you for the Five Star Reviews!

Five Star ReviewsWow!  Two new Five Star reviews! Thank you very much to Danny Smith and Eric Ewald for their great reviews of Serpents Underfoot. It is one thing to publish a novel. It is quite another thing to have somebody actually read it and enjoy it enough to take the time to give you a review on Amazon!  That really does mean a great deal to a writer, especially an aspiring indie author like myself! So, my sincere appreciation to both of you!

Son of Serpents Underfoot!

For those who enjoy this first novel and are interested, I’m researching for the sequel to Serpents Underfoot!  Yes, there will be future adventures of JD Cordell and his fearless K9 sidekick, Ajax!  My mind is a sea of swirling possibilities, awash with brilliant plot ideas, and villainous characters! Well, okay … maybe I am getting a little carried away!  Let’s just say I am busy doing research for the sequel!

Return to Vietnam?

The whole situation with the fate of the Montagnards after the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam is both fascinating and tragic. They fought hard as allies of the American forces … especially the Special Forces teams.  In the end, after we left, they paid dearly for their support … subjected to the wrath of the victorious North Vietnamese, some fled. But, the North Vietnamese slaughtered thousands of them.  I feel I may need to revisit that in the second book.  Just one idea …

Serpents Underfoot: A New Novel by DC Gilbert

Serpents Underfoot by DC Gilbert: The Count Down

DC Gilbert - Serpents UnderfootHello!  I am DC Gilbert. I have been editing my book, Serpents Underfoot, for weeks. I think my eyes are ready to go on strike. Finally, late last night I uploaded the interior PDF and the cover PDF at CreateSpace! I have gone through their review process and now await their review process to complete.  It is exciting!

I am sure that when I get a copy in my hands, I will find some typo I missed. It will jump off the page and hit me squarely between the eyes. But maybe not … I guess if that happens, I will just fix it and move on … a revised edition. After all, Serpents Underfoot is my first novel! I am sure there will be some newbie mistakes.

Meet JD Cordell and His Family

JD Cordell’s family paid in blood to make this country what it is … a land of the Free and the home of the Brave! JD’s family fought in every conflict that the United States has been involved in going back as far as the French and Indian War. This includes JD’s father, Curtis Cordell, who fought in Vietnam,  Curtis married the beautiful South Vietnamese woman who nursed him back to health in a Montagnard village while his was MIA deep in the jungles of Vietnam.

A U.S. Navy SEAL

JD grew up believing that honor, loyalty, devotion to duty, and compassion are part of being a man. This was reinforced with his years of training in Isshin-ryu Karate and Vovinam, a Vietnamese martial art, from his years of martial arts training. All this molded JD into the man he is and the accomplished Navy SEAL he has become.

While on a mission in Afghanistan, JD’s SEAL team unexpectedly discover a deadly terrorist plot being orchestrated by a radical mastermind living in Iran, which if successful, could spell disaster for the United States. Receiving a message from an old school friend who now works for the CIA, JD finds himself suddenly catapulted into the center of this sinister plot. When terrorists kill his friend, JD jumps feet first right into the action. In addition to working to avenge his friend’s death, JD uncovers a trail of treachery and betrayal that reaches from the mountains of Iran to the highest levels of the U.S. Government. What can JD do prevent a major terrorist strike which has the potential to destroy the entire American way of life? Read the book to find out … but, JD’s honor will not allow him to simply walk away.

I hope you will give my book a read. It will be available very soon now. And, if you like it … please give me a good review on Amazon.com.

Thank you, DC Gilbert

Trident Warriors: The U.S. Navy SEAL’s K9 Warriors

K9: Trident Warriors

trident warriorsI stumbled on this great book about the U.S. Navy’s Trident Warriors while doing research for my novel, Serpents Underfoot. The hero in my novel, a U.S.Navy SEAL currently deployed in Afghanistan, is sent to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina to meet and train with his new partner and the newest member of their team, Ajax. Ajax is a Belgian Malinois.

I am certainly a dog lover. It is hard for me to not be. Name another creature on this planet that gives his master such unconditional love and loyalty … and asks nothing in return. A dog will even have this bond with a totally undeserving abusive, neglective or cruel master. That is the depth of the partnership a dog forms with his human.

Because of this, as I grow older, I find I have a hard time trusting people who do not like dogs. I also find I have trouble trusting people my dog does not like. Oh well!

German Shepherd vs. Belgian Malinois

So to be honest, Ajax started out to be a German Shepherd. Since I love German Shepherds … and my German Shepherd, Sophie, is a great dog. However, after the research, this changed. My main character’s dog is now a Belgian Malinois. The Malinois is very similar in most respects, abilities, and traits to the German Shepherd. It is just, on average, about 10 pounds lighter. From my research, I now understand this is a big deal when jumping out of combat aircraft with a dog strapped to your chest. So, Ajax became a Belgian Malinois.

About Mike Ritland

As a Navy SEAL deployed in Iraq, the author, Mike Ritland, got to see several military working dogs in action. He knew at that moment that he’d found his true purpose in life. Ritland started his own company, training and supplying dogs for the SEAL teams, U.S. Government, and Department of Defense. Mike understood that less than 1% of all working dogs could make the cut and then go on to contribute to the success of our nation’s elite combat units. He wanted to provide a reliable source for the best trained, most steadfast, courageous canine warriors. These highly specialized canines had to meet tough standards and pass rigorous selection tests before any serious training could even begin.

These K9 Trident Warriors are highly trained working dogs, capable of handling both detection and apprehension work in the most dangerous and extreme environments. Like the Navy SEAL, they can do their jobs under intense battlefield conditions. They are certainly fiercely aggressive and athletic. But, these dogs also develop a close bond with their handlers and the other team members. As true members of their teams, these proud K9 warriors are, like their human counterparts, unwavering in their devotion to duty. Strong, tough, and disciplined. These dogs take it to the enemy, despite any pain, injury, or fear.

A New York Times Bestseller

Reading this book, Trident K9 Warriors, gave me real insights into these elite canines. I learned about the breeds, how they train, and the extreme missions they undertake. They save countless lives and ask for little in the way of reward. From detecting explosives to eliminating the bad guys, these powerful dogs are also some of the smartest and most highly skilled working animals on the planet. If you want to learn about these amazing dogs, the sacrifices they make and the heroic actions they take on the battlefield, then this is a book you should most certainly read.

K9 Trident Warriors … a Really Good Read

This is a great book about military working dogs. And, I have read several. This book tells their tale in a realistic, honest way. While reading this book you cannot help but come to love and admire these dogs who courageously put themselves between their handler or their team … and danger. All they ask in return is a pat on the head, a treat, or a kind word.

Mike Ritland does a great job of conveying the rigors of Seal dog selection and training. In addition, Ritland also incorporates historical facts about military working dogs and how they evolved into the elite spec-ops K9 warriors of today. Ritland manages to tell their story honestly and without divulging any sensitive operational secrets that could put Seals and their K-9 teams active in the field in danger.

An Authentic Telling

Ritland’s book gives the most detailed descriptions of these dogs, their abilities, and their missions you can read. To get any more real, you would have to be out working with the dogs yourself. Mike Ritland has an amazingly in-depth understanding of these dogs. Ritland tells presents his narrative in a very readable way. It is enjoyable and easily holds your attention. You find your heart captured by these dogs and their devotion to their handlers and their duty. It is easy to tell Ritland has a real love and admiration for these dogs.

You will not find a more realistic personal account of these heroic dogs anywhere. I came away with a whole new appreciation for these K9 Trident Warriors and their U.S. Navy SEAL handlers. Furthermore, these teams deserve the gratitude and respect of all Americans. They operate at a higher level. Furthermore, it is a level that is almost unthinkable for many of us. If you like military history, if you love dogs, you should read this book. It one of the best of its kind. Therefore, I highly recommend it.

Modern Media Reporters Redefine American Heros

0603-bruce-caitlyn-jenner-getty-vanity-fair-7

Meet America’s newest national hero, Bruce (Caitlin) Jenner.  Jenner is a true hero, at least according to the newest media darlings.  I guess this is because he finally figured out that he was not really a boy, but actually a girl.  Luckily, being a member of the Kardashian Clan, she had enough money to feminize her new looks and augment her breasts. Or this whole thing could have been pretty ugly

Personally, I think a lot of liberal women actually do not like men.  They want girls with penises;  you know … the whole metro-sexual thing!  Anyway, As I understand it, Caitlin is keeping her penis.  This is probably a smart move … just in case she later decides she is really a boy again and needs to change back.  This is a real possibility should the Kardashian Clan need a new publicity stunt to bolster their sagging revenue streams.   I am not sure penis re-attachment surgery is available yet, but maybe if she kept it on ice?  It is probably is a much safer bet just to keep it attached for now.

All joking aside, I am really happy for Caitlin (formally known as Bruce) Jenner.  If he is happier as a she, who the heck am I to say he can’t be a she.  As a conservative and a true believer in individual rights … more power to him or her.  I am just not really buying into the great American hero spin being trumpeted by the media. So ESPN awarded Caitlin Jenner the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. So what?  It doesn’t really mean a thing.  Anyone can create an award and give it to whomever they damn well please.  I do think it is about as silly as Barack Obama getting awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for things they hoped he would do in the future.  We see how well that all worked out.

On another note, last Thursday, former Texas Governor Rick Perry announced his 2016 candidacy for president.

Standing with Rick Perry during his announcement were two other men.  U.S. Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, of “Lone Survivor” fame, and his twin brother, Morgan. The Luttrells, who are from Texas, have gotten close to Perry over the years and Marcus is known to have a close, almost father-son, type of relationship with Perry.

It is a real case-in-point that the media representatives present did not recognize the two men standing behind Perry. How is that even possible?  It is a real commentary on the current state of journalism, or lack there of, in this country.  They certainly rushed to recognize what a great hero Caitlin Jenner is and I bet they could pick her out of any crowd.   O.K.,  So maybe they might not know who Morgan Luttrell is, but Marcus Luttrell?  Are you kidding me?  Four clueless left-wing journalists revealed via their tweets that they had absolutely no idea who Marcus Luttrell was.

1) Ellen Mitchell.  This is particularly scary to me because she is a Washington-based reporter for Inside Defense, covering Army helicopters, UAS, radios, vehicles and TRADOC.

clueless 1

2) Katie Halper.  Another scary one because she is a history teacher at The Dalton School; besides being a progressive, comedian / blogger at Salon, The Nation, Feministing & Comedy Central.

Clueless 2

3) Judd Legum.  Is Editor in Chief for ThinkProgress and the Senior Vice President for Communications at American Progress so it is not surprising that he would not recognize a real hero.

Clueless 3

4) George Zornick.  Prior to joining The Nation, George was Senior Reporter/Blogger for ThinkProgress.org. He worked as a researcher for Michael Moore’s SiCKO and as an Associate Producer on “The Media Project” on the Independent Film Channel.

Clueless 4

Army Ranger Specialist Zac Oja had this to say:

The priorities in this country are so screwed up as it is. A transgender person like Bruce Jenner is a hero. But someone sacrifices their college scholarship and their time to join the military and they don’t get nearly as much recognition.

We’re missing the overall point of what this country was founded upon, collective sacrifice for the greater good. The fantasy of America is what we focus on. Caitlyn Jenner, a multimillionaire and the Kardashians are the ones shaping our reality. What happened to the soldier who deployed his 12th tour in Afghanistan, that’s my definition of a real hero.

The usual hero is a day-to-day person, who does it out of a sense of purpose. They don’t do it for Instagram likes or retweets. I’m not surprised they don’t know who Luttrell is, our priorities are so messed up in this country.

Those reporters represent a smaller portion of America that is more engaged in what sells than anything else. And a Navy SEAL war hero doesn’t sell so well anymore. For them to not know who Luttrell is a perfect snapshot of what the country’s greater priorities are. Because I guarantee if Perry had the Kardashians standing next to him, everyone would be able to identify those people.

I think Army Ranger Zac Oja pretty much sums it up!
