Darren C Gilbert
DC Gilbert was born in Ilion, NY but grew up in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. An avid reader, he particularly enjoys military history, epic sagas, spy novels and historical fiction. In addition to serving in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1983, Darren has over 33 years of martial arts training including managing his own martial arts school for 12 years. He has earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee and Western Governors University respectively. Darren is also a graduate of Executive Security International’s Executive Protection Program and is a Certified Protection Specialist.
As well as being an avid reader, DC Gilbert loves to write. His novel, Serpents Underfoot, and collection of short stories, Adirondack Bear Tales, are both available from Amazon.com. Darren currently lives in Asheville, NC with his German Shepherd, Sophie.
Writing and Blogging
In addition to writing novels, Darren enjoys blogging and has been doing so for about 10 years. He posts information about his books and related activities, book reviews, food reviews, information about German Shepherds, short stories, pro-military stories, and occasional political musings on his blog.
He is currently working on the sequel to his first novel, Serpents Underfoot. This exciting sequel, titled Montagnard, will include a return to Vietnam, more Montagnard history, and of course, thrilling action with JD Cordell!
Darren Gilbert also provides freelance writing services through Fiverr.com. He has written book descriptions, author’s bios, fight scenes and blog posts, as well as provided proofreading services for hundreds of clients. His clients have includes authors of children’s books, poetry, self-help books, fiction, non-fiction, blogs, and even musicians. While he no longer runs a karate dojo, Darren Gilbert stays as active in martial arts as he can with his busy schedule. He attends several seminars a year and works out with friends and fellow martial artists. He began his Isshin-ryu training with Sensei Allen Wheeler in 1983. His last formal instructor was the late Sensei Sherman Harrill. Other influences have been John Kerker, Eddie Satterfield, AJ Advincula, Louis Grinnell, and Remy Presas. Darren also studied Tae Kwon Do while stationed at Camp Casey in South Korea from December of 1981 to December of 1982.
Karate Areas of Interest
Darren Gilbert likes to focus on traditional karate with an emphasis on a solid understanding of the basics, understanding the kata, and the application of the lessons learned from kata in self-defense.
Recently, Darren has developed an interest in Escrima, a Filipino martial art based on knife fighting techniques. He trains whenever possible with Sensei Richard Rosenthal of Raleigh, NC, who practices and teaches the system of Lago Y Mano Escrima as taught by Sensei AJ Advincula.
